Andrew Heath, P.E., began his career with the Georgia Department of Transportation in 2008 as a Transportation Planner within the Office of Planning. In this role he worked in statewide planning and along with other responsibilities, also worked with multiple metropolitan planning organizations across the state in the development of their capital programs. During this time, he was instrumental in establishing the Transportation Investment Act (TIA) program and guiding the Regional Commissions through that legislatively required process. In 2013, he was selected as the Executive Assistant to the Chief Engineer.
In 2015, Andrew was named State Traffic Engineer, and was responsible for managing the Transportation Management Center, Freeway Operations and Incident Management, Arterial Management, and Safety programs on a statewide basis. In this position, he played a key role in advancing several initiatives at the Department including the development of a large broadband expansion program, a connected vehicle program, and initiating the Coordinated Highway Assistance and Maintenance Program (CHAMP). In 2021, Andrew was promoted to Deputy Chief Engineer over the Divisions of Engineering, Intermodal, and Operations. In this role, he managed a broad range of responsibilities across project preconstruction and roadway operations, transit, rail, and aviation.
In June 2025, Andrew was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation by Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. As Deputy Commissioner, he serves as the second-in-command of the Department, contributing to the leadership of the 10th largest transportation network in the U.S., which includes a workforce of approximately 4,000 employees and an operational budget exceeding $4.5 billion.
Andrew is a graduate of AASHTO’s National Transportation Leadership Institute and Advanced Transportation Leadership Institute and was named a finalist for the AASHTO Vanguard Award in 2018. Additionally, he was named the ITE Georgia Transportation Professional of the Year in 2022. Andrew also serves on the Georgia Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors Board.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Auburn University and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Georgia
