Dr. Scott McWhorter is the Lead of Federal Energy Strategy with the Georgia Tech Strategic Energy Institute, where he leads efforts to connect and grow Georgia Tech’s energy research portfolio. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance (SHEA) and CEO of Joule Consulting, LLC. He is a founder in FuelX Innovations, a technology startup developing innovative hydrogen storage systems.
Scott is the former Division Director of Clean Energy Research at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), where he led programs across DOE Office of Science, EERE, OE, ARPA-E, and FE, raising over $30 million in new funds during his tenure. Scott’s Savannah River career spanned 21 years with three years spent as a technical advisor with the U.S. DOE EERE Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technologies Office in Washington, D.C., as well as developing and serving in leadership roles with two Manufacturing USA Institutes.
Scott serves on multiple advisory boards for Clean Cities and University research consortiums such as Palmetto Clean Cities and Florida Solar Energy Center at the University of Central Florida. His research focuses on hydrogen systems, critical minerals processing, and understanding the connection across energy supply chains. He has a PhD from Louisiana State University with a focus on the development and understanding of micromechanical systems for sequencing the human genome (DNA).
